Class Format
Class will begin with an oral quiz for the first 30-40 mins of class. The children will be asked 10 questions based on previous classes and readings. Their job is to either write down the answer, if they know it, or the question if they do not. The questions that they do not know will indicate areas of study which they need to review. I will then go over all the answers to this test and answer any questions on this quiz or previous lessons. It is important that your children use this time to find answers they are having difficulty finding on their own by asking questions.
This quiz has no value and I will not be checking it, its sole purpose is to give the student feedback everyday, where they are having problems. If they find themselves getting below 60 percent on any quiz they need to increase their amount of studying and/or seek help. There is a resource center at lunch with history teachers on specific days, sos (teacher guided homework service on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the cafeteria), the learn site (you can find a link under history above) or teacher (me) tutorials which are done by appointment. There should be no reason to frustrated in the course with all the help available.
The rest of the time will be spent in lecture, projects or book assignments. If children are finding it difficult to keep up with lectures I suggest the following strategies:
1) Preview the lesson: if you have foreknowledge of the lessons content then this can lessen the stress of taking notes
2) Find a friend in class good at notes and photocopy their notes
3) Remind me to slow down in class, if no one says anything I think everyone is happy
Some days we will change from lecture for testing, pop quizzes(most quizzes are warned in advance and some are not) or seat work,
often we combine lecture and assignments to split the time.
